Martian dust storms have a seasonal period of roughly October to April, and scientists at JPL stated that the dust storm threat to Surveyor was of particular concern. However, this probe was intended to gather data about the red planet’s atmosphere, gravity, and magnetic fields, and Surveyor’s trajectory was specifically designed to be aerobraking through the Martian atmosphere at the height of the dust storm season. So one can legitimately conclude that the use of the phrase “of particular concern” was merely titillating phrasing used for dramatic effect. Any organization that wittingly exaggerates the reporting of totally expected conditions or skews its reports to the public, even by a narrowest of margins, cannot be surprised when such statements are held up to scrutiny.
